- Aug 14, 2009 I have an old dell dimension 4400. It had a really bloated installation of xp, so I decided I was going to install a fresh copy. Before installing, i checked device manager and made a screen shot so that I could look for the drivers later. I got all drivers working except for this thing called the Intel 82801 BA BAM AC'97 Audio Controller.

They advise me I needs PCI ethernet card which seems simple enough to put in. A PCI ethernet card is used to create a LAN port on the computer so you can connect it to a highspeed modem or router. The advantage of using a PCI ethernet cart as opposed to a USB is as follows. One is cost: PCI ethernet cards can be purchased for under $20 dollars(some USB adapters are $30 plus). And two is speed: USB 2.0 adapters are pretty fast but not as fast as PCI cards(your older Dell might not even have USB 2.0 and 1.1 is very slow). And three: A USB lan adapter will take a usable USB port away from you. As far as purchasing one you do not need to spend a ton of money. They are all pretty standard and the cheap ones work just as well as the expensive ones. Check out www.newegg.com where they have good prices and a large selection of computer components.
One port on the router is an 'Ethernet' port -- look closely to see the 8 wires in the socket.
